By the end of Year 1 your child should be able to:

Drawing:

  • Create different tones, patterns, shapes and textures with a pencil
  • Draw lines of different thickness and shape
  • Describe and create a range of shapes and patterns
  • Work on small or large scale

Painting:

  • Explore a range of different brushes- thick or thin
  • Explore a range of techniques and tools- mixing media, scraping, printing
  • Mix primary colours to create secondary colours
  • Paint from observation

Printing:

  • Explore printing by rolling paint over objects/stencils
  • Print a pattern
  • Experiment with colour and texture

Designing:

  • Design and evaluate an end product
  • Use chosen materials and add decoration
  • Weave with fabric/materials
  • Use computer programmes to design shapes and patterns

Craft:

  • Cut and tear card/paper/fabric for a purpose
  • Use a range of adhesives to join parts
  • Thread a needle and sew using a running stitch
  • Select, group and use different materials and textures for a purpose

Sculpt:

  • Mould, shape and join clay
  • Use tools to add texture
  • Understand safety involved with using tools
  • Construct models from a range of materials 

By the end of Year 2 your child should be able to:

Drawing:

  • Experiment with different types of pencil to create lines and marks
  • Experiment with different shades and tone
  • Use pastels and charcoal to show dark and light tones
  • Create a range of shapes and patterns

Painting:

  • Use different brushes- thick or thin – to create a desired effect
  • Mix colours and know which primary colours make secondary colours
  • Begin to add shade and shadows to paintings
  • Use specific tools for certain scales- thin paintbrush for small scale

Printing:

  • Roll paint over objects/stencils to create a desired pattern
  • Experiment with colour
  • Use digital media to create prints
  • Create repeating patterns

Designing:

  • Design, edit, improve and evaluate an end product
  • Choose, use and adapt chosen materials and add decoration
  • Use computer software to create images and effects with lines
  • Record and collect visual information using digital cameras, iPads

Craft:

  • Choose an appropriate adhesive to join parts e.g. wood glue or PVA
  • Experiment with different types of stitches to create textural effects
  • Use collage/mood board to collect ideas and information
  • Develop skills in stitching, cutting and joining

Sculpt:

  • Mould, shape and join clay for a desired effect adding texture and detail
  • Use tools safely and appropriately
  • Join clay and construct a base for extending and modelling other shapes
  • Use papier mache to create a simple 3D object
